August 27, 2010 - Signatures on the petition are ranging from as far away as Sioux City, Iowa; Lees Summit, MO; Metairie, LA and Boyce, LA. Thank you to those of you who have forwarded the petition message on to friends and neighbors. It is important to show elected officials that many people want to see I-49 completed for economic development, tourism, transportation efficiency and safer travel in general. Please continue to encourage others to sign the petition and forward it to their friends. Be sure to follow us on Facebook. Periodic posts show new signatures counts and important updates.

According to a story on TheCityWire.com today, a study will be released Monday (Aug. 30) that is meant to remind federal officials to not forget about rural America when allocating federal highway dollars, said Glenn Bolick, a spokesman with the Arkansas Highway & Transportation Department.

Bolick said the report includes a “brief” mention of Interstate 49.

“Connecting Rural and Urban America” is the title of the third in a series of reports from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Officials from AASHTO and the AHTD will present the report at 1:15 p.m., Aug. 30 in the Arkansas Ballroom of the Little Rock Peabody Hotel.

The “Transportation Reboot” series by AASHTO seeks to “identify the need to increase capacity in our transportation system to unlock gridlock, generate jobs, deliver freight, and connect rural and urban America.”

John Horsley, AASHTO executive director, AHTD Director Dan Flowers, Mississippi Department of Transportation Director and AASHTO President Butch Brown, and The Poultry Federation of Arkansas-Missouri-Oklahoma President Marvin Childers will be involved in the report discussion.

You can read the entire article by clicking on the link below title "New report to make case for rural interstate funding." Click on "Transportation Reboot" link above to visit the AASHTO site and review the first two articles of the series.

March 19, 2010 - Thank you to everyone who has signed this petition in the past week. We were able to present signatures from 670 supporters to the Arkansas House and Senate Transportation Committees and the Arkansas Highway Commissioners yesterday. The petition will remain open in order to collect more signatures for future meetings with elected and appointed officials. Please continue to share this web site address with your friends, family and co-workers. Your supported is crucial and deeply appreciated by those striving to make Interstate 49 a reality.

March 12, 2010 - The purpose of this petition is to collect signatures from individuals who strongly support the completion of Interstate 49 from the Canadian border to New Orleans, Louisiana. This major section of national infrastructure will pass through Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. It will be a critical element in reducing transportation costs for the movement of raw materials, food and consumer goods across North America from the Gulf Coast into Canada. It will also provide a safe route for private motorists and tourism. The estimated cost to complete the interstate is $4.9 billion. However, Wilbur Smith Associates has estimated the time and travel cost savings, over a 6-year period, by having I-49 completed will also be approximately $4.9 billion.

The goal of this effort is to impress upon elected and appointed officials the importance of the completion of Interstate 49 and the impact it will have on the local, state and national economy. We also want to demonstrate that the entire region is working together to ensure the completion of this project. As strategic opportunities arise, a list of those who have signed this petition will be presented to the appropriate officials for the sole purpose of seeking support and funding for completion of the I-49 Interstate. Your personal information will never be shared with anyone or used for any reason other than support for and communication about the Interstate 49 effort.
